about me

I’ve been writing here for nearly a decade. A DECADE. As you might expect, a decade’s worth of life has happened for all of us.

Over here…

I am really serious about eye cream and serums now.

My husband John and I have changed careers and homes, then changed again, then again one more time. These days, I write books and consult as a writer, editor, and social media strategist.

Once upon a time we were parents to two sweet little boys. Now one of those little boys is a man who’s living in Hollywood as an actor and comedian. The other little boy is in full teen mode – taller, busier, and funnier than me and doing things like listening to music on vinyl and crushing his parents in fantasy football.

B9011241-3BBA-41FC-BADB-AA119A96FF06We have added two dogs to the brood, see above re: independent children.

I make homemade pasta, John sous vides. See above re: independent children.

We have lost family, and we have gained family. Our hearts have responded accordingly.

I devised a system that helps with the overwhelm of all the books I want to read. Non-fiction reading happens during the day and fiction at night. The books work in shifts, and it makes us all more comfortable.

As a couple, John and I have greedily binged hundreds of episodes of stuff because the new golden age of television is no joke you guys.

My first novel The IFs came out in 2017, and the next one is on the way.

In Atlanta, Spring of 2019, our family exited breakfast and happened upon Civil Rights icon and American hero Rep. John Lewis. He was kind and gracious and wonderful. They say don’t meet your heroes, but I thought it went pretty ok. Here’s photographic evidence:Lewis

Which brings me to something else you might want to know about me. John and I met and fell in love while students of the Journalism School of the University of Southern California. Everything about that sentence informed the rest of my life. While at USC we were lucky to hear directly from legends like Walter Cronkite, Diane Sawyer, Tina Brown, and my childhood idol and crush, Tom Brokaw, who I got to MEET. Here’s photographic evidence.:IMG_5121Is this your first time to The Fulcrum Chronicles? Welcome! I’ve written about: puzzles, sunscreen, playgrounds, white pants, pumpkins, Stranger Things, sexy Abraham Lincoln costumes, boredom, baseball, camping and not camping, the Container Store, reasonableness, turning 40, and Amelia Earhart, among other things. Your guess is as good as mine about what’s coming next.

WTFC? Or, Why The Fulcrum Chronicles?” Every day is a teeter totter. (Remember teeter totters and all the ways you could get hurt on one?) There’s that point on the teeter totter where the plank balances. I’m no scientist or playground engineer, but I’m pretty sure that point is called the fulcrum. I like to think that’s right where God is. Maybe smiling at us as we travel up and down, pushing off the ground with our feet, and then helping us out when we get trapped for an agonizing minute by the big kid on the other end, and maybe giving that kid a stern look. It’s fun, scary, and slightly nauseating, but not a ride if we don’t have the fulcrum.

Wow, you are writing about me back in the late 80’s, early 90’s. I had to crack up, because I always said, “I can’t sing and I love rap music.” It ended up being a long and tragic journey for us, which I won’t bore you with except to say, I’m glad I stumbled upon this blog. I think it will be very refreshing and might help me find my way back to church. I never lost my way with God, but The Church, well, now, that’s where my story is…I just have to have the courage to write it. Thanks for sharing your life here. I’m going to just camp out a while…not in a creepy way…if you don’t mind.

As another Pastor’s Wife of a slightly different generation, and of a similar mindset (Rock and roll, the KFOG variety, instead of rap), one of my fevorite Seminary moments was on Geneva Terrace at the post-baccalaureate-beer-bash. Contemporary dee-jayed music was playing loudly, and all these future pastors (male and female) and future pastor’s wives were rocking out, singing along with music that was totally unfamiliar to me, and just being as authentically sassy as anyone can be. Not only was it fun, it was hope for the future of the church!
